European Centre of Thracian Studies
Thracian Studies or Thracology is a scientific discipline that was born in late in the 1800s as a branch of prehistory and archaeology. It studies the civilization of the Thracians “the most numerous and widespread people in the world”, according to Herodotus, the historian.
The Dragan European Foundation has been promoting Thracian Studies since 1969, organizing four international symposia and publishing the proceedings after the symposia in Rome in 1977 and 1979, Palma de Mallorca in 1981 and Boston (USA) in June 1984.
In July 1984, as part of its historical initiatives, the Dragan European Foundation opened the Centro Europeo di Studi Traci (CEST or European Centre of Thracian Studies), with head office in Rome, with the aim to promote research and studies and achieve a better understanding of every aspect of ancient Thracian and Mediterranean populations as well as their relationships with other cultures.
After its opening the Centre has been organizing a fifth symposium on Thracology at Spoleto in 1987, a sixth in Florence in 1989 and a seventh at Palma de Mallorca in March 1992, in collaboration with the International Council of Indo-European and Thracian Studies. Edizioni Nagard published the proceedings of all the symposia.
