Azione Ecumenica Europea

In August 1968, after publishing 426 copies in three editions, the review Pro Azione Cattolica Romena (and its equivalent in English Romanian Catholic Monitor) changed name and format and became Azione Ecumenica Europea, still with a parallel English edition European Ecumenical Action, with the Romanian equivalent entitled Pro Acţiunea Catolică Română. The subtitle changed too and from “A free forum for the discussion of spiritual issues related to the reunificaton with Rome” became “A free forum for the reunificaton of Churches founded by Constantin Dragan in 1955”.

The only change was in the name; the intents and spirit remained unchanged. At first the terms “ecumenical” and “European” would seem mutually exclusive, the former implying the universality of action for the reunification of Churches, while the latter could limit such action on the boundaries of the European continent.
But in spite of criticism for choosing a new title, there lay the deep conviction that only if Europe found a straight path to its position in the world by finding its spirituality and unity again, could it effectively take part in the process of profound transformation that humanity was confronting.
