Pro Azione Cattolica Romena

The first issue of Pro Azione Cattolica Romena, “A free Forum for the discussion of spiritual problems related to the union with Rome” was published in 1955. The Review, whose head office was in Rome, enjoyed a certain vitality, although it couldn’t circulate freely in Romania. A monthly publication, it was issued in three editions: Pro Azione Cattolica Romena in Italian, Romanian Catholic Monitor in English and Pro Acţiunea Catolică Română in Romanian.

This publication bears witness to the commitment for a dialogue between the Christian Churches and between Eastern and Western Christianity; in particular it shows the commitment to the dialogue between the Romanian and the Roman Catholic Churches.

It was also the voice of Christianity and Eastern European spirituality, at a time when it was politically persecuted by the Communist regime and State atheism and expressed the views of the United Romanian Catholic Church, which had been suppressed by 1948 legislation. The importance of Pro Azione Cattolica Romena - Romanian Catholic Monitor - Pro Acţiunea Catolică Română, lies not only in its cultural contribution, but also in the fact that it is an exceptional historical document.
